“The only thing we have to fear is fear its-self”
Franklin D Roosevelt
Have feelings of fear ever stopped you from getting what you want? If the answer is yes then you’re not alone. Fear is one of the most common emotions that stops people from achieving their goals and keeps them working from a point of mediocrity. We prefer to stick to what we know when we’re working from a place of fear. The problem with this is that it stops us from progressing and moving forward in our lives.
The good news is I have one very simple step that will change the way you view fear.
Susan Jeffers breaks down ‘fear’ in her book ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. It’s a great insight into why we fear and how others overcome fear. The epiphany for me with this book is the following point:
“Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.”
So – the idea is that it’s not the ‘thing‘ that you fear that is stopping you – it’s actually the feelings of fear its-self. What does this mean? It’s simple:
It’s actually easier to tackle your fears head-on than to ignore them!
By taking action and pushing through your fears you dis-empower them and in the process massively empower yourself. The more you tackle your fears, the less power they have. And at some point, once you’ve addressed a fear a number of times it’s quite common that it will literally vanish. The upshot is that we all have fears and that will never change – in-fact ever notice how once we overcome one fear another one appears? This is because we are all evolving and growing and seeking new challenges to overcome. What’s important here is that the only thing we can change is the way we react to our fears – and the most successful people have just as many fears as everyone else – the only thing they do differently is to allow themselves to experience their fears and then decide to push through them. And this is actually easier than living with the fear its-self.
Simple Life Strategy: overcoming fear in one simple step
1. Take Action: pick one fear and push through it today
Imagine how great it will feel to have conquered those fears instead of being at the mercy of them!
Remember it’s easier to tackle your fears head-on than be consumed by them!
Don’t listen to the excuses in your head trying to stop you from making a change! Do it now! Take action!
I would LOVE to hear about your own experiences of pushing through fear – please do comment on this post. You never know – your own story may just be the helping hand to encourage someone else to overcome their own fears.

I agree with you completely. I usually sing the song, ‘When You Walk Through A Storm’ when I’m trying to get through a fear in my life.
What a great song Glynis! I love it! It’s amazing how easily we can build things up in our heads when the reality is never as bad as what we anticipate! 😉
