make 2015 your year

January’s a bit of a weird month isn’t it?

There’s a lot of pressure to set big lofty goals, get all of our shit into order and generally become better than we were last year.

While this is all great in theory, I think often we can get sucked into other people’s dreams…we end up setting goals because we feel like we should, we start going to the gym because that’s what should happen at the start of the year, we look at new career options when we don’t really know what we want.

I have a saying about the word should

“Don’t should on yourself”.

Anytime we ever do something because we feel like we should – we fail. We fail ourselves. We fail life.

I want this year to be YOUR year – I really do. And that’s the whole point. I want it to be YOUR year and no one else’s.

So make a start by going through your goals list if you have one (if you don’t have one yet then you can find out how to set goals in my MINDFOOD radio interview…or this goal setting article).

Check in with yourself and see how many of the goals are really YOUR goals? Or are they someone elses?

Also check in to see if they are goals set by our culture or the media? More often than not we can end up setting goals based on cultural expectations such as ‘buying a house by a certain age’ or following a set career path, even having kids…yet we fail to check in and see if this is really what we want.

And it’s no different with our careers. So many of my clients come to me completely at their wits end because they just don’t love their jobs.

They confide in me quietly and desperately…they feel like something must be wrong with them…they should love their job….or they should know what they want to do next!

But I just want to scream from the rooftops – there is absolutely nothing wrong with you!! You just picked someone else’s job….you took a path that wasn’t yours…you took a wrong turn.

That’s all.

And that’s why it feels wrong – because it IS wrong.

So many of my clients will come to me and after a discussion it will come out that they never really wanted that job in the first place…it was a suggestion from a well meaning family member….or it was the sensible option that they thought they should take.

The problem is that when we build a life based on what others want for us– we do so at the expense of our own inner voice. We don’t listen to what we really want. And when we’re not authentic to who we really are – we feel it deep inside our bones.

We get that nagging feeling…in the pit of the stomach….that defies all logic…we just KNOW this is not what we were meant for. We are meant for bigger, brighter things….we are meant for so so much more.

And it’s true of course…we are.

But it’s hard to hear our voice of higher intelligence when the world is drowning it out with what we should be doing…with how we should be living.

If you want to make 2015 YOUR year and nobody else’s then there’s one thing you must do.

Listen to YOU.

Nobody else.

Just YOU.

Because what I find when I help people to find new careers is that they already know deep down inside what else they might want to do…there’s usually a faint murmur somewhere from the pitt of our soul…calling us in the direction that we truly want to go.

We just need a little direction.

In a few weeks, I’m going to give you some free training & resources to help you figure out exactly how you might go about finding work that you LOVE. I’m doing this because I’m passionate about helping people to live passionate and exciting lives where they love what they do!

So stay tuned for this…and in the mean time, please, please I beg you – make this year all about YOU. It’s your time.

  1. Reassess your current career
  1. Check in and see if this was a career YOU chose?
  1. Ask yourself ‘Did I ever really want this? Or is it something I felt like I should be doing?’
  1. Consider if you really want this career for the next few years? How would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and it was 2020 and you’re still in this job? Would you feel fulfilled?
  1. If the answer is no then you know what you need to do. It’s time to find out what you REALLY want to be doing with your life! It’s time to make 2015 YOUR year!
