A few weeks ago I interviewed Stanford Professor Bob Sutton (an amazingly intelligent and lovely man by the way). Bob knows a lot about successful people and companies (in-fact he’s spent time with the head of Google and lots of other very successful human beings).
Our chat got me thinking about how there’s one very simple step that absolutely anyone can take to guarantee them results. And I’m really excited to share that with you now. I use this all the time and it’s never let me down. It’s kind of a no-brainer really and you’ll see why.
People often come to me as a coach to help them push through some kind of barrier. It might be to believe in themselves enough to go for that promotion, or to have the guts to go after their dream job or to have the courage to figure out what their passion is in life. Whatever it might be, we inevitably do some work to break down their thinking, pull it apart and replace it with an attitude that will help them to move forward and accomplish their goals.
Now, while I know that working with the mind works to help people make changes in their lives, Bob Sutton raised a really good point when we chatted in our interview.
And that’s the point of action.
Instead of the idea that by changing our thoughts, our behavior then follows suit he raised the point that it works the other way around too.
So, by changing our behavior, we can automatically change our thoughts and our beliefs.
What’s really fascinating about this approach is that you can use it to really quickly make some changes in your life simply by changing your behavior! So you can get whatever you want if you just take action!
What does this mean?
What this means is that if you have a barrier in life, if there’s something that is stopping you from getting what you want then there’s one very simple step you can take to make it happen.
Instead of thinking about what you want to change, just take action and change your behavior first.
Here’s an example:
Say you’re not happy in your current job and you feel like something is missing. You really want to change your life but you have no idea where to start. The more you think about it, the more you talk yourself out of doing anything. And before long, you are telling yourself that this is all you’re qualified to do and you may as-well stay where you are.
Sound familiar?
Here’s what you need to do next:
Instead of focusing on your thoughts, simply shift your focus to your behavior. What one thing can you do right now towards your goal? How can you behave differently so that you might take a tiny step towards the life of your dreams? Could you do a little online research about different types of jobs? Could you ask a few friends what they think your best talents and skills are? Could you make a list of your strengths and talents?
The point is, the sooner you take action, the sooner you get out of your head and into a different behavior that will ultimately take you 2 steps closer to your goal. By doing so, your mind also has no choice but to agree with your behavior. If you’re mind is filled with thoughts that “I can’t do this’ or “I don’t know where to start’ then by taking action you are literally proving your mind wrong!
Take it from me – no one can argue with action: it creates immediate results. It’s essentially the theory of cause and effect; if you take action towards your goal in a consistent fashion then you cannot help but reach that goal.
Simple Life Strategy: The One Tip that Will Get You Absolutely Anything in Life. Guaranteed.
1. Think of a goal or something that you want to change in your life
2. Notice what happens when you do this – see where your mind goes? Does it start to come up with reasons why you can’t do it and obstacles?
3. Instead of trying to change the way you’re thinking, choose to cut straight through your thoughts with the power of action!
4. Think of one small thing that you can do right now to help you get closer to that goal.
5. Now all you have to do is take action! Do that one small thing and notice how once you take action, your mind has no choice but to follow your behavior.

I agree with this concept and witness it daily. My wife would say I am really smart (CPA, MBA, etc.). She would admit that she is not. But, she is way more successful than I am because she has a propensity to take action almost to point of obsession. She does make a lot of mistakes but you can’t make a mistake without taking action. I have talked myself out of things by thinking it through too much to avoid mistakes when I should have just taken action.

Thanks for sharing Sean 🙂
I see this alot with people who are very intelligent. Their intelligence becomes a double-edged sword and it can often stop them form taking action as they try to ‘figure everything out first.’
You’re right – start before you’re ready, work things out as you go! Nothing is permanent – we always have the option to change. And of course – there is no such thing as perfection 🙂
Here’s to ‘taking action!’
