We were going to spend Xmas on our own this year just the two of us but unfortunately it never worked out that way. We had my husband’s sister and his cousin and her partner. His sister annoys me at times as she brings up about babies and children every time we are in her company. We haven’t any which I think makes it worse. This year on Xmas day she brought it up again saying about the big fat gypsy wedding programme on TV I said I have watched it and many of the girls getting married had only just left school she replied they want to get married young so they can do the housework and start families. I replied sharply some people can’t have families. Then she began to say how cute Prince George was and I got fed up hearing it all and threw my knife and fork down and she I’m going to the toilet. She asked my husband was I ok he said he thought so as he didn’t really hear her comments anyway. If I hadn’t had left the room I think I would have really let rip as I felt tired and stressed arranging the meal most of the day. I told my husband no disrespect but I am trying to go away this Xmas coming and get away from it all.
Hi Lavinia,
That’s a shame to hear that you had to experience this. I would try to look at your sisters reaction as a reflection of her own issues. So – try not to take it personally. You could say to yourself- ah that’s interesting she said that’ and then let it wash over you. Easier said than done I know! But with a little practice you’ll be completely untouched by your sister’s remarks!
I hope your Xmas this year was better – do let me know!
Warm wishes,
Zoe B
