1950s Woman

I’ve spent the best part of a decade researching the most effective, successful and happiest people on the planet and one of the most important themes that has cropped up time and time again is this:

The importance of how you talk to yourself inside your own head

I’ll put it another way – the most important conversation you will ever have is with yourself. Think about it for a minute. We put alot of effort and focus into the conversations we have with others. From a psychology perspective, every conversation we have with another person is based on self-enhancement – on a subconscious level we want others to think highly of us, therefore we talk about things of interest to facilitate that goal. We make an effort to be interesting, funny and unique. But how much attention do we place on our ‘internal dialogue’?

Most of us don’t even realise we have an internal dialogue. We just let our thoughts roam free and take us wherever they want to. The most effective and successful people however, are acutely aware of the impact that our inner thoughts have on our lives. And if we want to succeed, then the conversations we have with ourselves need to be those of a ‘successful’ person, not those of a ‘self-doubting’ person.

Have you ever looked at an Olympic athlete and wondered what’s different about them? How do they push themselves to achieve such great things? Often they don’t look or sound any different to you or I. The one thing that I guarantee will be different is their ‘internal dialogue’ because I know for a fact that it is not possible to achieve great things when you allow your mind to be filled with negative thoughts.

Simple Life Strategy | Paying Attention To Your Internal Dialogue

  1. Start to become aware of your internal dialogue
  2. Notice the sound of the voice inside your head- is it slow or fast-paced? What ‘tone’ does the voice have?
  3. Pay attention to what this internal voice is saying? Is it being helpful? Or is it stopping you from taking action?
  4. Define if the internal voice sounds positive or negative
  5. If you feel that it’s negative, choose not to listen to it and to replace it with a more useful, positive voice

Notice how different you feel when the conversation is positive inside your head. Imagine how much more you could achieve if it was positive most of the time, instead of negative?
